The Agent-Built Autonomous Directory Business
Ask an AI agent to find your audience's problem, then build, run and SEO-optimize a site + newsletter that solves it — you just post about it.
Depends on your AI agent subscription and domain. Vercel, GitHub, Resend and Stripe all have free tiers or pay-as-you-go pricing to start (check each site).
The tool stack
Researches audience problems, builds and maintains the site, runs SEO/AEO and the newsletter.
Vercel ↗Hosting and deploys, connected as an agent plugin.
GitHub ↗Code repository the agent commits to.
Resend ↗Sends the newsletter / transactional email.
Stripe ↗Takes payments (e.g. sponsorships).
Prices are the vendors' published list prices as researched in Oct 2026 and change often — always check the vendor's pricing page.
Step-by-step setup
- Choose an AI agent. (Alex Finn says he likes Grok Bot.)
- Talk to your agent to find challenges your audience has.
- Pick one challenge and ask the agent to build an autonomous business that solves it.
- Ask it to build and maintain the site, optimize for SEO and AEO (answer-engine optimization), and start a newsletter for it.
- Connect Resend, Vercel, Stripe and GitHub to the agent as plugins so it can ship, email and charge on its own.
- Talk about your autonomous business on social media so it gets distribution.
What's automated vs. the human 5%
🤖 The machine does
- Audience research and idea selection support
- Building, deploying and maintaining the site
- SEO/AEO optimization and content updates
- Running the newsletter and payments plumbing
🧑 You still do
- Choosing the problem and approving the agent's plan
- Posting about it on social media (Alex says this is all he's done since launch)
- Reviewing quality, spend and anything sent under your name
Overview
On Oct 20, 2026, Alex Finn (@AlexFinn) posted on X that “last week” an AI agent built him “a completely autonomous business.” In a follow-up reply he identified it as agentusecases.ai, a directory of what people are actually doing with AI agents, with categories, a daily “new use cases” feed, an RSS feed, a sponsor page and a newsletter.
His recipe is short: let the agent find a real audience problem, have it build and maintain a site that solves it, optimize for search (SEO) and AI answer engines (AEO), bolt on a newsletter, and give it plugins for hosting (Vercel), code (GitHub), email (Resend) and payments (Stripe). The human job is distribution.
His claimed results (unverified)
According to Alex Finn’s post, in roughly a week since launch the business had:
- made $1,800
- gotten almost 100,000 visitors (his attached analytics screenshot shows 90,199 visitors)
- 200,000+ page views (screenshot: 206,913)
- 3,000 newsletter subscribers
In a reply he added that 60% of views came from X and 40% from SEO and AEO. These are his own numbers; we haven’t independently verified them.
“All I’ve had to do since launch is post about it.” — Alex Finn
Costs
Low. The main cost is your AI agent subscription and a domain; Vercel, GitHub, Resend and Stripe all have free tiers or pay-per-use pricing at small scale.
Realistic income
Be careful extrapolating. Alex Finn has a large existing X following, and by his own breakdown most of the traffic came from X. Without an audience, expect slower growth and most of your effort to go into distribution. A new directory with no following may earn nothing for months. Monetization options are sponsorships, a newsletter ad slot and paid listings.
Risks
- Distribution is the real 5%. His results lean on an existing audience.
- Quality and accuracy: an autonomous agent publishing content needs review to avoid errors and thin pages that search engines penalize.
- Credentials and spend: giving an agent payment and deploy plugins means you should set limits and review what it ships.
- Novelty decay: early traffic from a viral post may not persist.
